The Phippen Museum was founded to honor George Phippen, a gifted Western artist and the first president of the Cowboy Artists of America. Although George passed away in 1966 at just 50 years old, his artistry inspired a movement to celebrate Western art. In the early 1970s, artists, friends, and family formed the George Phippen Memorial Foundation, creating a sanctuary for Western art and artists.
In 1974, the inaugural Phippen Western Art Show & Sale began at the Prescott Public Library, becoming a cornerstone for the Foundation. A land donation from the James Family’s Deep Well Ranch allowed the dream to take shape, and in 1984, the Phippen Museum opened in Prescott, Arizona.
Now a thriving cultural institution, the Phippen Museum, Prescott’s only fine art museum celebrates Western art through exhibitions, events, and educational programs. Anchored by its history and the Annual Western Art Show & Sale, it inspires visitors of all ages.
